The answer in 30 seconds

A page problem does not justify disabling protection everywhere. A list of blocked items shows protection activity, but does not by itself identify the cause of a failure.

Describe the symptom, inspect protection information and test any exception only for the affected site. Review extensions and sync separately.

Examples to adapt

A form starts working after one change

Record the change and assess whether a narrower setting is possible.

An exception makes no difference

Restore it rather than leaving an unnecessary weakening in place.

Follow the method

  1. 1
    Observe the problem

Record the public URL, expected action and symptom. Check whether one component or the whole site is affected.

  2. 2
    Inspect protection information

Read the shield information near the address. Compare it with Mozilla’s documentation before attributing the failure to a blocked item.

  3. 3
    Test a limited exception

If appropriate, use the documented site-specific control, reload and repeat the action. Restore protection if it does not help.

  4. 4
    Check extensions separately

Inspect permissions and temporarily disable one relevant extension. Retest before changing another variable.

  5. 5
    Review synchronisation

If using a Mozilla account, inspect the chosen categories on each device and test a temporary bookmark before a major cleanup.

A checklist to keep

Use these checks to record what you found. The grid supports a decision; it does not make one for you.

What to check

Do not disable all protections at once.

Record exceptions retained deliberately.

More extensions do not always improve troubleshooting.

Common questions

Should I install several protection extensions?

Consider what each adds and which permissions it needs; overlapping tools can complicate diagnosis.

How do I identify the cause?

Repeat the same action while changing only one relevant setting or extension.
