The answer in 30 seconds

An elaborate folder tree can become difficult to maintain. A few destinations linked to repeatable tasks are often easier to use.

Start with one folder, rename ambiguous links and export a backup before a major cleanup. Similar titles can identify different document editions.

Examples to adapt

Two links look identical

Open both and compare the URL and document edition before deleting one.

The “To read” folder keeps growing

Move useful lasting references and remove material you no longer intend to use after checking it.

Follow the method

  1. 1
    Take a small inventory

Choose one folder and identify the links you still use, unclear names and apparent duplicates. Avoid attempting everything in one sitting.

  2. 2
    Create a simple structure

Try “In progress”, “References” and “To read”, or another short set based on your tasks. Give each new link an obvious destination.

  3. 3
    Rename with context

Combine subject and origin, for example “Timetable — museum” or “Bookbinding — library”. Open an unclear link before shortening its title.

  4. 4
    Verify before removing

Check old links and compare editions. Export bookmarks before extensive changes and retain useful publication details separately.

A checklist to keep

Use these checks to record what you found. The grid supports a decision; it does not make one for you.

What to check

Keep the folder structure small.

Do not confuse duplicates with separate editions.

Protect an exported file if it contains private destinations.

Common questions
