The answer in 30 seconds

A scholarly, cultural or image search tool searches a particular collection. Knowing what is included matters as much as learning its filters.

Start with the collection’s scope, then search using concepts and synonyms. A bibliographic record does not necessarily provide the full document.

Examples to adapt

A scholarly result has no PDF

Look for the publisher or repository version using its title and identifier.

A museum image is downloadable

Read the stated rights and attribution conditions before reuse.

Follow the method

  1. 1
    Identify the collection

Check subjects, languages, periods and document types covered. Note important exclusions before interpreting a missing result.

  2. 2
    Build a focused query

List the concepts and synonyms. Add one filter at a time, keeping track of the population, period or language it excludes.

  3. 3
    Read the record

Distinguish a preprint, a published article and a later version. Retain a persistent identifier when available.

  4. 4
    Check access and reuse

Verify whether full text is available and which licence applies. A visible image is not automatically free to republish.

  5. 5
    Compare another collection

Search the same question in a second relevant corpus. Document coverage differences rather than counting hits as evidence quality.

A checklist to keep

Use these checks to record what you found. The grid supports a decision; it does not make one for you.

What to check

A record is not necessarily full text.

Search filters can exclude relevant work.

Keep identifiers and version details.

Common questions

Does a specialist engine cover its whole subject?

Read its scope; no label alone establishes exhaustive coverage.

Can I reuse an image found there?

Check the rights on the actual item, not just the search interface.
