The answer in 30 seconds

A collection of links can help exploration, but the existence of a citation does not establish that it supports every part of a sentence.

Ask a bounded question and open the cited documents. Separate confirmed findings, uncertain points and material you could not access.

Examples to adapt

A citation is inaccessible

Look for the original publication or record that the claim remains unconfirmed.

Several links agree

Check whether they independently investigated the question or copied one source.

Follow the method

  1. 1
    Bound the question

Specify the subject, territory and period. Avoid combining a recommendation, history and exhaustive comparison in one request.

  2. 2
    Open the references

Find the passage behind each important assertion. Check the author, date and actual scope of the page.

  3. 3
    Trace the origin

Prefer the producer’s document to repeated reports about it. Several cited sites may rely on one announcement.

  4. 4
    Write a measured conclusion

State what was confirmed and what remains uncertain. Keep consulted documents and access dates with your notes.

A checklist to keep

Use these checks to record what you found. The grid supports a decision; it does not make one for you.

What to check

A link must support the associated statement.

Read dates and document scope.

Do not count copies as independent confirmation.

Common questions

Can I cite only the generated summary?

For evidence, cite the underlying document you actually examined.

What if sources disagree?

Compare their dates, methods and scope before choosing a conclusion.
