Define scope
Explain which projects may appear, under what criteria and in which geographic or thematic area. A hidden scope makes absences impossible to understand.
Also state what inclusion means. Membership in a collection does not necessarily certify every activity of a listed website.
Write original records
A useful record does not copy the destination’s meta description. It summarises subject, audience, available content and likely reason to visit without unverifiable superlatives.
It should be long enough to support a decision but short enough not to replace the destination.
Classify without manipulation
Understandable categories and alphabetical ordering make a collection navigable. If ranking depends on payment, popularity or evaluation, disclose the criterion.
A homepage selection can rotate to distribute discovery without pretending to name “the best.”
Maintain the data
Check URLs, detect redirects, remove expired domains and date the dataset. Let project owners and visitors report mistakes.
Sensitive records need more frequent review. An unmaintained directory eventually creates more confusion than help.
Measure usefulness
Beyond traffic, monitor searches with no result, unclear categories, broken links and correction requests. These reveal real architectural weaknesses.
A good metric answers an editorial question: do visitors find a relevant destination with enough context?
Design a record model
A consistent model may include a title, primary category, description, domain, direct link and, when informative, a dated visual preview. Every field should answer a real visitor question.
Required fields reduce incomplete records; optional fields avoid artificially filling information that cannot be checked. An unknown value should remain unknown rather than become a guess.
The model should be able to evolve without breaking old records or creating unexplained differences in treatment.
Write to support a decision
The description should begin with the actual subject and indicate what visitors can probably do or read. Promotional terms such as “best”, “essential” or “number one” require evidence and are rarely necessary for orientation.
State a limitation when a domain name could create a broader expectation than the observable content. Avoid interpreting the owner intentions without public evidence.
A good record supports a click decision without pretending to have audited every destination page.
Plan for difficult states
A domain can become temporarily unavailable, redirected, sold, transformed or abandoned. The procedure should distinguish a short outage from lasting change and allow suspension when the destination becomes misleading or unsafe.
Old captures must not be presented as the current site. Their role and age should be explained, and they should be removed when they no longer describe the project at all.
Maintenance also covers duplicates, categories that have become vague and pages that no longer create visitor value.
Make the collection accessible
Navigation should remain usable by keyboard, on mobile and with assistive technology. Categories, links and labels should retain meaning outside their visual context.
Preview images support the record but never replace the name, description or text link. The directory remains understandable when an image fails to load.
A stable structure also helps search engines distinguish portal content from the external websites it references.
