Measure internet speed more reliably

Control device, Wi-Fi and background traffic before using a speed result to diagnose a connection.

Step-by-step guideUpdated
Follow the method ↓
An internet connection is measured near a router and compared with a Wi-Fi test

The answer in 30 seconds

A speed test measures a path from one device to a test server at one moment. It can be limited by the device, browser, Wi-Fi, local traffic or the test server as well as by the access line.

Repeat tests under comparable conditions, ideally including an Ethernet test near the router, and record time, device, connection type and upload, download and latency results.

Examples to adapt

Slow in one room

Compare near-router and room tests before blaming the internet subscription.

All devices slow

Test a wired device if possible and note whether background downloads are active.

Video calls fail

Record interruptions and latency as well as headline download speed.

Follow the method

  1. 1
    Prepare a device

Use an updated device capable of the speeds you expect and pause large transfers.

  2. 2
    Test near the router

If possible, connect by suitable Ethernet cable and record the conditions.

  3. 3
    Repeat over time

Use the same method at different times to see whether the problem persists.

  4. 4
    Compare carefully

Separate line performance from Wi-Fi coverage and device limitations before contacting the provider.

A checklist to keep

Use these checks to record what you found. The grid supports a decision; it does not make one for you.

What to check

A single test is not a diagnosis.

Older hardware and cables can limit measured speed.

Changing test server or Wi-Fi band can change the result.

Common questions

Why is Wi-Fi slower than Ethernet?

Distance, interference, walls and device capability can constrain the wireless link.

What should I send to a provider?

Give several dated results with device and wired or wireless conditions, plus the symptoms you observe.
