The answer in 30 seconds

An explanation can make a difficult passage approachable. It still needs to be compared with the article, particularly where units, conditions or qualifications matter.

Choose an identified document and ask about one specific difficulty. Distinguish translation from interpretation and keep the original passage beside the explanation.

Examples to adapt

A figure explanation seems inconsistent

Compare the caption, axis labels and methods before asking a narrower question.

Two answers disagree

Find the underlying passages and preserve uncertainty if the article does not resolve it.

Follow the method

  1. 1
    Identify the document

Keep title, authors, year and identifier. Confirm that the file is the intended version.

  2. 2
    Target the difficulty

Ask about a term, paragraph or figure and state your reading level. Separate “translate this” from “interpret this result”.

  3. 3
    Check the evidence

Read the table, caption and relevant methods section. Verify units and conditions of measurement.

  4. 4
    Write your own note

Describe the result and its limits in your own words. Mark unresolved points rather than accepting the simplest answer.

A checklist to keep

Use these checks to record what you found. The grid supports a decision; it does not make one for you.

What to check

Retain bibliographic details.

An explanation does not replace the article.

Check figures and tables in their context.

Common questions
