Everyday practical guides

Find the right edition of a book

Title and author often identify a work, but not its exact edition. To find the volume you need, compare publisher, date, language, translation, format and identifier where available.

The method

  1. Record known details from the book, a readable photograph or bibliographic reference. Separate certain information from remembered details.
  2. Find a catalogue record and examine title variants. Compare edition statements and contributors, including translator or illustrator when their contribution matters to your need.
  3. Check the match against a library or seller’s copy. The same title in paperback, larger format or translation may refer to different volumes.

Fictional worked example

In a fictional case, you want an illustrated translation published in 2008. A 2016 record has the same title but names a different translator. Keep both references and note the difference rather than automatically treating the later edition as equivalent.

The record to keep

Keep the full record, address, available identifier and distinguishing edition details. For a citation, also record the page of the copy actually used.

What this method can establish

A record establishes bibliographic information, not a copy’s availability or condition. Ask the listing’s publisher to clarify incomplete details.
