Everyday practical guides

Read a job offer before applying

Turn the vacancy into a question sheet: duties, requested skills, location, working pattern and application procedure. A vague statement should become a question rather than a condition you assume is satisfied.

The method

  1. Find the offer’s reference and origin. Record employer name, visible date and application channel; seek confirmation through a known channel if identity is ambiguous.
  2. Separate described tasks from stated criteria. For each skill, record a real experience example or a point to clarify. Do not turn a preference into a requirement without explicit evidence.
  3. List missing details: hours, precise location, remote arrangements or recruitment stages. Prepare a few short questions, then tailor your application to the duties actually described.

Fictional worked example

A fictional vacancy mentions “regular travel” and “proficiency with a tool”. Your sheet asks about frequency and the functions used. You then connect a genuine task from your experience to that function, without inventing experience or claiming to know expectations absent from the offer.

The record to keep

Keep the offer, its reference, your questions and the answers received. Send only the documents requested through an identified recruitment channel.

What this method can establish

This reading prepares a conversation; it determines neither job eligibility nor a legal obligation. The vacancy may be changed or withdrawn.
